Summary Description: The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in marine geodesy and seismology, and associated instrumentation.

The successful candidate will work with data from recent deployments of ocean bottom seismometers and absolute pressure gauges from Alaska and New Zealand to 1) analyze earthquakes and seafloor uplift associated with slow slip events offshore New Zealand, and/or 2) continue the development of new instrumentation for marine geodesy with a focus on evaluating new ocean-bottom pressure and tilt/strong motion sensors.

Minimum Degree Required: PhD

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in Geophysics (Seismology, Marine Geodesy) or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications: Excellent programming and mathematical skills are highly desired. Prior experience in seismology and/or marine engineering and geodesy, and evidence of the ability to conduct and publish high quality research, are required.

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Staff Associate.  The Staff Associate will provide technical support for the Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network

(LCSN, URL:http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/LCSN).  Activity includes preparation, installation, operation and repair of seismic equipment used to monitor earthquakes.  Field work to average 25-35% of the time, seasonally (that is, 5-10 days a month, less in winter, more in summer) in the eastern United States.  Plan network service trips to determine priorities as a member of a team.

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, geophysics or related field and four years of related experience required, or a Master’s degree in engineering, physics, geophysics or related field and two years of related experience required. Experience in Internet communication and Linux is required.  Hands-on experience will include broad range of electronics with good theoretical capability leading to understanding of equipment function.  Adequate soldering skill to make various cables for radios, seismometers and GPS receiver required. Good command of spoken and written English required.  Must be physically capable of working in the field in isolated locations – to walk up and down steep hills while carrying up to 50 pounds. Must be able to load/unload, and to drive a pickup truck for field work, and operate generator and other simple machinery.  We value ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

1) Postdoctoral Position: Portable UV Laser Microsampling for ICP-MS Studies of Glass and Ceramic Art – Yale University

The Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH), at Yale University, is seeking a scientist at the postdoctoral associate level to focus on the refinement and application of a portable ultraviolet (UV) laser ablation micro-sampling tool for elemental and isotopic studies of glass and ceramic objects. The project involves the use of ICP-MS facilities at Yale’s Department of Geology & Geophysics to quantitatively assess the performance of the existing prototype. Additionally, the postdoctoral associate will collaborate on the application of the sampling tool and analytical method to the study of objects, preferably made of glass, in the American Decorative Arts collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. This position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to work intensively with museum scientists, conservators, curators, scholars and students, while developing skills and experience that may be applicable in geology, mineralogy, paleontology, archaeometry, forensics, material culture studies, conservation science, etc.

About the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage

The Institute is a research collaborative, dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of material culture. Our research decodes art and artifacts, enabling scholars across disciplines to incisively interpret origins and histories. Fundamental to this work is understanding and managing change, especially deterioration and its detection, monitoring, and treatment. We also develop tools and methodologies that enable new modes of studying art and artifacts. Facilities include a variety of ED-XRF instruments, optical microscopes, FTIR microscope, Raman microscope, SEM/EDS, GC/MS, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and an array of accelerated aging and mechanical testing equipment. In addition to scientific laboratories, the IPCH also houses the Conservation Laboratory and the Digitization Laboratory, which are collaborative spaces providing infrastructure, equipment, and expertise to Yale’s collections and researchers pursuing the examination, documentation and conservation treatment of objects. IPCH staff has easy access to the West Campus Materials Characterization Core, which includes XPS, FE-SEM-EDS, XRD and WD-XRF facilities. The Yale Metal Geochemistry Center includes two class ten clean rooms, two multi-collector ICP-MS systems, one single-collector ICP-MS system, and one multi-collector TIMS system.

Required qualifications

  • Completion of a PhD in the chemical, physical, earth or archaeological sciences.
  • Expertise with ICP-MS.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and a desire to work collaboratively.
  • Curiosity about art, artifacts, or archival materials and an interest in engaging with museums and collections.

Preferred qualifications

  • Familiarity with geochemical analyses and isotopic studies is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience with the application of analytical techniques to cultural heritage objects is desirable but not required.

The Department of Earth Science at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, invites applications for the Dalhousie Earth Sciences Doctoral Award for admission to the Ph.D. program in Fall 2019. This award provides financial support to outstanding Canadian and International students with a demonstrated record of academic success in their undergraduate and early graduate studies.

The successful applicant will be awarded a competitive Ph.D. funding package, which covers tuition (and differential fees for international students), fees, and includes a stipend for living expenses of $19,000 CAD/year. The award is guaranteed for two years, then subject to renewal for the 3rd and 4th years based on student performance.

The Department has a long history of demonstrated excellence in Earth Science research and teaching, with a current emphasis on marine geology/geophysics, petroleum systems, tectonics, high temperature and experimental geochemistry/petrology and earth surface processes. USGS Mendenhall Research Opportunity 17-14:  Using paleomagnetism to understand the tempo of hazardous volcanic and neotectonic activity

We seek a postdoctoral scientist with strong field and laboratory experience in paleomagnetism to work with experienced geologists, paleomagnetists, and chronologists at the USGS in Menlo Park CA on problems related to hazards from volcanic and neotectonic activity.  Paleomagnetism can provide critical constraints on the eruptive behavior of volcanoes and on the extent, magnitude, and timing of deformation in active tectonic terranes.  We welcome proposals on topics such as eruptive frequency of volcanoes along the Cascades and Aleutian arcs, or improving our understanding of the timing and duration of magmatism at high threat volcanoes, or constraining magnitudes and rates of deformation to evaluate potential seismic hazards in the Pacific Northwest or other tectonically active regions of the western United States.

8) Two PhD positions in Surface Processes – Colorado School of Mines

Hi all,

I am recruiting one to two PhD students to join my new surface processes research group at the Colorado School of Mines this coming Fall, 2019. Possible project ideas include the following, but I am also happy to discuss other topics with interested students.

Examining the effects of vegetation, land use and lithology on hillslope sediment transport after wildfire.

Combining experimental field data with numerical modeling, high resolution topographic analysis and theory development to refine our understanding of the statistical representations and underlying physics of long distance particle motion and interactions with topographic roughness.

Examining the relative contributions and timescales of post-fire sediment transport processes and landscape response using short-lived radionuclides (e.g., Be-7 and Cs-137).

Developing the use of seismic and acoustic techniques to study stochastic or ‘patchy’ geomorphic processes (e.g., rock fall and bioturbation by trees or animals) and to measure substrate characteristics relevant to the effects of biota on sediment transport (e.g., root density, soil saturation and cohesion).

12) USGS Mendenhall Fellowship Opportunities

  • USGS Mendenhall Post-doctoral Fellowship to study “Earthquake-related land-level changes and their cascading consequences in Cascadia and elsewhere”.

Within seconds to minutes, megathrust earthquakes may cause land-level changes along hundreds of kilometers of coastline and inundation equivalent to hundreds of years of sea level rise. These perturbed coastal lands will continue to evolve over many decades, while adjusting to coseismic slip, secondary faulting, shallow material responses, and mantle processes. The plate convergence and interface locking that lead to megathrust earthquakes also cause slowly evolving surface uplift and subsidence. These often-overlooked land-level changes will affect tidal and tsunami runup, stream and river gradients, surface and groundwater drainage, flooding potential, coastal ecosystems, sedimentation and erosion, and coastal and off-shore infrastructure. The USGS seeks a post-doctoral Fellow to conduct research needed to assess and prepare for the hazards and risks associated with earthquake-generated land-level changes and the cascade of phenomena they initiate.

1) Two postdoctoral researcher positions in active-source seismology – JAMSTEC, Yokohama Japan

The Structural Seismology Group in Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (CEAT), JAMSTEC invites applications for two Postdoctoral Researcher positions working for a research project entitled “Subduction Zone Observation and Monitoring for Hazard Mitigation”. This project is an integrated seismogenic zone research project through seismic surveys, seafloor observations, and monitoring earthquakes and tsunamis. 5) Geoscience Lecturer Position – Boise State University

The Department of Geosciences at Boise State University invites applications for a permanent full-time Lectureship to begin summer, 2019. Our geoscience lecturers are responsible for delivery of critical lower-division courses (including labs) in geology, geography, and earth system science, and development and delivery of geosciences courses of broad interdisciplinary interest to the greater university community. The teaching load will be equivalent to three courses per semester including instruction, overseeing laboratory sections and teaching materials, as well as mentoring and supervising graduate student teaching assistants. In partnership with other faculty, the successful applicant will participate in curriculum discussion, development, and review, especially with respect to department-level and university-level learning outcomes associated with general education courses. 6) Assistant Professor Position igneous and/or metamorphic petrology – Idaho State University

The Department of Geosciences at Idaho State University (ISU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in Fall 2019. We are seeking an individual withteaching and research expertise infieldbased igneous and/or metamorphic petrology, and experience in one or more related fields such as tectonics, geochemistry, and/or geochronology.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or A.B.D. status in Geology or a related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in both research and teaching. They will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mineralogy, igneous/metamorphic petrology, and geochemistry, as well as participate in the annual ISU summer field camp. The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active, externally funded research program and supervise and support graduate students at the M.S. and/or Ph.D. levels. ISU Geosciences is a leader for innovative field-oriented geosciences in the Northern Rockies. We are located in the northern Basin and Range, on the edge of the Snake River Plain volcanic track and Yellowstone. 7) Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Earth History – School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria

The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Earth History, to commence as early as September 1, 2019. We seek a solid-earth scientist who undertakes field investigations and observations of the rock record to study global (bio)geochemical cycles in the context of global tectonics, climate, paleoceanography, paleogeography and/or the hydrosphere. We particularly seek candidates who will develop a research focus that examines the Earth as a system. The candidate will be able to interact broadly with faculty who specialize in solid-earth, earth-surface, ocean, and atmosphere processes.

The successful candidate will develop a vigorous, independent, externally-funded research program that complements existing strengths in SEOS. It is also expected that the candidate will supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to introductory geology, tectonics, sedimentology, geochemistry, geological field schools and/or other core geology areas. A PhD is required at the time of evaluation and post-doctoral experience is desirable. Commensurate with their career stage, qualified candidates must have an excellent record of research published in or in preparation for leading scientific journals. Effective teaching and student supervision are expected, supported by evidence which may include past experience, references, a teaching statement (see below), and the presentation of a candidacy seminar.

8) 2019 ASU Exploration Postdoctoral Fellowship in Earth and Space Science – Arizona State University

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Exploration Postdoctoral Fellow.  The fellowship provides opportunities for outstanding early-career scientists and engineers, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research.  Research areas within SESE encompass Earth and planetary sciences, astrobiology, astrophysics and cosmology, instrumentation and systems engineering, and science education.

9) PhD opportunity – Montclair State University

Doctoral assistantship position to explore the role of organic sediment dynamics on fluvio-deltaic evolution. The student will be involved in the development of numerical models, as well as their application to early Paleogene depositional environments in south-central Wyoming. 10) Tenure Track Position – Biology Department, WHOI

The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites exceptional candidates to apply for our full-time exempt tenure track position on our scientific staff.  We seek to hire at the Assistant Scientist level; however, extraordinary candidates may be considered at Associate Scientist without Tenure, Associate Scientist with Tenure, or Senior Scientist levels.  The successful candidate will complement our existing interdisciplinary strengths in biology, biological oceanography, and marine ecology. We are particularly interested in applicants who conduct research in marine zooplankton ecology using novel observational, experimental and/or modeling approaches. Expertise may include (but is not limited to) physiology, behavior, trophic interactions, or the impacts of climate change.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree, postdoctoral experience, and a record of scientific research publications in scholarly journals. Scientific staff members are expected to develop independent, externally-funded, and internationally-recognized research programs. They also have the option of advising graduate students and teaching courses through the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering.
