Sampling Italian subduction complex rocks, western Alps. Capturing the impact of hammer on rock, this photo features Dr. Besim Dragovic as he samples a meta-rodingite (hydrothermally altered mafic/ultramafic rock) from the Lanzo massif, NW Italy. These rocks were subducted to depths of c. 70 km and subsequently exhumed during the Alpine orogeny. The NSF-funded ExTerra Field Institute and Research Endeavor (E-FIRE) project is investigating this paleo-subduction zone at localities throughout the western Alps. Photo credit: Matt Kohn
