2) PhD Position in Marine Geophysics — GEOMAR Helmholtz-Centre for Ocean Research, Kiel, Germany
The research unit “Marine Geodynamics” is offering a PhD position in Marine Geophysics from 01.05.2014 onwards. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate to join a team of international scientists in the research unit “Marine Geodynamics” within the research division “Dynamics of the Ocean Floor”. The willingness for international travel and participation in research cruises is required. The successful candidate will work on the analysis and interpretation of marine geophysical data acquired along the Kermadec island arc north of New Zealand.
The Kermadec island arc marks the plate boundary between the Pacific and Australian lithospheric plates and merges northwards into the Tonga arc. The southern segment of this subduction zone is characterized by the entrance of the Hikurangi plateau into the oceanic trench. The Kermadec margin system is controlled by basic tectonic processes, making this an ideal target zone for research on mechanisms of mass transfer at convergent plate boundaries. The seismic transects acquired across the Kermadec margin along four profiles between 28°S-38°S will improve our understanding of mass transfer processes and structure of the oceanic lithosphere. Aim of the project is the analysis of the geophysical data using modeling tools and tomographic inversion to evaluate the influence of the subducted oceanic lithosphere on magmagenesis and seismogenesis along the Kermadec island arc.
GEOMAR with its seismic processing center offers an excellent geophysical infrastructure for seismic data analysis and interpretation. The PhD student works in the interdisciplinary and stimulating field of marine geophysics and volcanology.
The PhD student will have the possibility to join the “Integrated School for Ocean Science (ISOS)” offering a wide range of courses for graduate training.
Qualification:
• University degree in Geophysics or related field is required
• Prior experience in seismic data analysis would be beneficial
• Good communication skills are expected
The position is available for 3 years with a salary according to TVöD-Bund 13 (75%) of the German tariff for public employees. The position cannot be split. GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply. GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
Please submit your application by 28 February, 2014 electronically to hkopp@geomar.de. Questions regarding the position and research unit can be addressed to Heidrun Kopp (hkopp@geomar.de), Head of Department.

Build your career with us as we invest in our growing geology programmes.
The roles
The School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences houses world-leading research, as well as large and successful PhD, masters and undergraduate programmes. Vigorous geology research addresses crustal fracture and fluid flow, basin analysis, deep Earth processes, geological disposal of nuclear waste and the extraction of petroleum resources.
As the first phase of major investment into growth in our geology programmes, we’re making two appointments: one at professorial level and one at lecturer/senior lecturer/reader level. You will contribute to the School’s Earth Science teaching programmes, while pursuing your own area of specialist geological research.
The person
Both roles demand an outstanding research record and expertise in magmatic or metamorphic processes, tectonics or structural geology. You could be a geochemist or mineral scientist and your research may be experimentally, analytically, computationally or fieldwork focused.
For the professorial post you will need an outstanding record of world-class personal research, with experience of leading a wider research group. You will demonstrate the ambition and leadership skills to grow and extend our research and play a significant role in steering and managing geology teaching, as well as grow our staff and resources to deliver these activities.
For the lecturer/reader post you will have an outstanding research record; experience of field teaching would be an advantage. The level of your appointment will be commensurate with your track-record and future potential.
