4)    Postdoctoral Fellowship and Graduate Fellowship – University of Rhode Island / Smithsonian

We are seeking candidates to join our research team and work collaboratively on an NSF-GeoPRISMS funded project to explore the influences of water, oxygen fugacity, and composition on calc-alkaline differentiation, with a focus on the Alaska-Aleutian Arc. Two opportunities are available:

(1) Graduate Research Fellowship in Geochemistry. We are currently seeking a PhD student to participate in a multi-disciplinary study of magmatic oxidation state and its relationship to calc-alkaline differentiation and formation of continental crust in the Aleutian arc, with emphasis on the records preserved by natural lavas and melt inclusions. Funding is available for a minimum of three years of study toward a PhD in oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, Graduate School of Oceanography, with joint work to be done at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.  The student will be jointly mentored by Drs. Katherine Kelley (URI/GSO) and Elizabeth Cottrell (NMNH/Smithsonian). The student will have the opportunity to develop skills and new techniques in microanalytics (XANES, LAICPMS, EMP, FTIR), providing a broad education and research base in petrology/geochemistry. Strength in subjects such as experimental rock physics, elastic-wave propagation, tomography, migration, and inversion will be especially valued. •    Sedimentary Geology
Assistant Professor to Professor with a strong background in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy.  Applicants’ expertise may be in process sedimentology, sedimentary petrography, sedimentary geochemistry, sequence stratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy, or in other areas related to the study of modern or ancient sedimentary systems for the purposes of understanding Earth’s history, surficial processes, or hydrocarbon systems.  Applicants who have synergies with current department strengths, in geophysics, structural geology, geochemistry, and in stratigraphic interpretation, are encouraged to apply.  Additionally, the ability to teach field geology will be considered a strength.

•    Geodynamics
Assistant to Associate Professor level in the broad field of Geodynamics. We seek applicants who address fundamental problems in geology and geophysics. NC State University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level for a new Geospatial Analytics research and education program.  The successful candidate will lead research focused on advanced remote sensing and geospatial analytics of the Earth’s surface or shallow sub-surface, develop and teach related upper undergraduate and graduate courses, and assist with the implementation of a new graduate MS/PhD degree program in Geospatial Analytics. Research and teaching in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences address some of the most complex and important geoscience issues facing North Carolina and the world, including hurricanes, floods, climate change, water and air pollution, coastal erosion, the sustainability of fisheries, environmental cycles of critical elements (e.g., carbon and nitrogen), and the history of life itself.
Preferred experience to include one or more of the following:
·         Experience with hyperspectral imaging, IFSARE/InSAR and GPS Geodesy;

The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) announces a tenure-track faculty position to conduct original research and strengthen existing expertise in the fields of geophysics, tectonics, environmental sciences, and petroleum geology. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT, UTEP, AND EL PASO: The Department of Geological Sciences at UTEP has a faculty of 15 and more than 150 graduate and undergraduate students.  The Department is housed in an attractive 90,000 sq. ft. building, which contains faculty and student offices, laboratories, and classroom space, with research infrastructure that includes controlled source seismometers, passive source seismometers, gravimeters, magnetometers, and extensive computational and software resources.  The department was involved in the development of the Texan seismographs for controlled source experiments and currently operates 440 sensors.  It is also houses the National Seismic Source Facility an IRIS/NSF funded facility to aid investigators in controlled source seismic research. 7)      Tenure Track Position Director, Earth Science and Observation – Center Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences University of Colorado Boulder

The President and the Provost of Florida State University are pleased to announce a major initiative to develop a multidisciplinary group studying the short- and long-term dynamics of coastal ecosystems, especially with respect to the interconnectivity among biotic and abiotic components of terrestrial and marine environments.  This strategic effort seeks to recruit as many as nine tenure-track/tenured faculty, open with respect to rank.  Faculty will have academic appointments in either the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) or the Department of Biological Science. In addition to maintaining a productive externally funded research program, the new faculty member will teach and mentor at the introductory, major, and graduate levels. The successful individual will have a demonstrated publication record, and will have developed, or show the potential for developing, a nationally recognized research program; relevant experience beyond the Ph.D. is essential. (6) Research position in Coastal paleoseismology/Quaternary environmental change, Nanyang Technological University
The Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, invites applications for a research fellow (postdoctoral level) in coastal paleoseismology/Quaternary environmental change. This project is part of an ongoing program to recover stratigraphic records of past earthquakes and tsunamis, and sea-level change in Indonesia. Skills in quantitative micropaleontology/palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and/or sedimentology of coastal systems are highly desirable. The candidate is required to have a Ph.D. in coastal geomorphology/geology.
The coastal paleoseismic project is led by Charles Rubin and Ben Horton and supported by the Earth Observatory of Singapore. The British Geological Survey is one of the world’s leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes.  We are offering a 3 year post-doctoral research position, working within the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Research Associate Training Programme.

BGS staff typically work in teams on a range of projects supporting a broad spectrum of scientific objectives from “blue-skies” research to highly focussed commercial contracts. The varied nature of the work programme, which includes opportunities to undertake personal research and to publish or present at international conferences, is highly valued, as is BGS’s commitment to training and developing its staff.

As a Rock Physicist Research Associate you will contribute to engineering geological and physical property projects on rocks in the BGS scientific programmes in the UK and overseas.  You will contribute to leading the development of BGS’s research into the engineering geological and physical properties of UK rock in a range of BGS projects together with contributing to reports, scientific papers and web knowledge dissemination.

You should be educated to 2:1 in a relevant degree and have an MSc/PhD in a rock physics, geomechanics or rock mechanics discipline.  In addition you must possess excellent project management, people and communication skills, both oral and written.  The post involves team working, therefore you should be able to work effectively with others.

Salary and Conditions:
Starting salary will be £26,450 per annum (pay award pending). A resettlement award will be given at the end of the training contract. A detailed training programme will be agreed. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.  A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, childcare voucher scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays.
