1) Two Assistant Professor Positions Paleontology/Sedimentary Geology and Geophysics – OSU Boone Pickens School of Geology

The Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University seeks to fill two tenure track assistant professor positions: one in paleontology/sedimentary geology and another in exploration geophysics. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2016. The successful applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in geosciences or related field at the time of appointment.

For the paleontology/sedimentary geology position, we are seeking a geoscientist with research and teaching interest in paleontology as well as sedimentary geology and stratigraphy. Desired areas of specialization may include invertebrate paleontology, biostratigraphy, ichnology, micropaleontology, and paleoecology.

For the geophysics position, we are seeking a geoscientist with expertise in basic and applied energy exploration, and who is able to teach courses in seismic exploration and earthquake seismology, as well as providing other teaching activities to prepare students for the oil and gas industry. Specific areas of specialization include, but not limited to, seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization, and microseismicity-passive seismic.

The successful candidates are expected to work across disciplines within the Boone Pickens School of Geology and collaborate with faculty specializing in petroleum geology, environmental geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, tectonics, and geophysics. We are seeking to fill the two positions with individuals who will develop vigorous and innovative externally funded research programs and who will contribute to teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidates should be able to supervise MS and PhD students.

The School has state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with analytical instruments and computer hardware and software to facilitate teaching and research in the School’s areas of specialization. The School has a wealth of equipment for field acquisition of geological and geophysical data. The School also hosts the Devon Visualization Laboratory and operates a field camp facility near Cañon City, Colorado.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford. The project is funded for two and a half years by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) as part of the Mantle Volatiles Consortium. It is aimed at developing and interpreting numerical models of coupled magma/mantle flow, thermal and chemical transport in subduction zones.

The successful candidate will be responsible for working in a team to develop finite-element based numerical simulations of two-phase flow, volatile-enriched melting, and geochemical transport in subduction zones. S/he must be able to interpret model behavior in terms of comparisons with a broad range of relevant, published, chemical and physical observations. S/he should be prepared to interact with geophysicists, geologists and geochemists who have related interests, and should be eager to communicate results at international scientific meetings and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Candidates must have a PhD in the Earth sciences, mathematics or physics, including but not limited to geophysics and geodynamics.  Knowledge and/or experience in development of finite-element based models is desirable; experience with numerical modeling more generally is required. Candidates should be ambitious and motivated; they should be able to effectively manage their work-load.

2) Postdoctoral position in subduction zone geodynamics – University of Oxford

Description:

Postdoctoral researcher sought for independent research in subduction dynamics. This could include 2D/3D numerical modeling of slab driven mantle flow, slab-mantle coupling, slab-driven overriding plate deformation, numerical solvers for complex rheological viscous flow problems, and/or 3D visualization of mantle flow in subduction zones. Research could also be in related fields that constrain/improve the construction, running, or analysis of numerical simulations of subduction. Related experience could include seismology, particularly that applied to the interpretation/constraints on geodynamic models, such as seismic tomography or shear wave splitting. Related experience could also include numerical algorithms, optimization, designing scalable software, or three-dimensional data visualization, with the interest to apply methods to geodynamics.

Position Information:

$45,000 USD/year for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal. Position could start as early at September 1st, 2015.

For this purpose, JAMSTEC has established an international postdoctoral fellowship programme. It is intended that research grants will be provided to successful applicants, which will enable them to work independently on research topics of their choosing: \1,000,000 for the first fiscal year and \500,000 for each of the second and third years. During the contract period, they will have access to the necessary facilities and equipment at JAMSTEC.

Successful applicants are expected to join our institutes on April 1, 2016 in Yokosuka, Yokohama, Kochi, or Mutsu, Japan.

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) and the Institute of Meteoritics (IOM) at the University of New Mexico invite applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Petrology. The position is a 9-month joint appointment with duties split equally between EPS and IOM. The position comes with a reduced teaching load to accommodate a high level of research-related activities. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated research activities in both terrestrial and planetary topics and who possess skills necessary to lead the integrated IOM/EPS experimental petrology laboratory facilities. The University of New Mexico is the largest and most comprehensive of the state’s institutions of higher education and is both a Carnegie Very High Research University and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution. The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences has a faculty of 20 and offers undergraduate degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences and Environmental Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences. 2) Wiess Post-Doctoral Research Fellow –Rice University, Department of Earth Science

The Department of Earth Science at Rice University is launching a Wiess Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship competition in the broad fields of Earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences. Interested candidates should have recently completed their PhD or are expected to complete their PhD by September 2016. The appointment of the fellow is expected to begin anytime between July and December 2016.

The principal selection criteria for the fellow are scientific excellence and a clearly expressed research plan to address questions at the forefront of Earth science, broadly defined. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) at Texas A&M University invites applications for an Assistant Research Scientist (Expedition Project Manager/Staff Scientist) with expertise in any aspect of borehole geophysics, petrophysics, or geophysics. A Ph.D. in geosciences or related field, and demonstrated on-going research experience is required. Applicants must have a demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English. Experience as a seagoing scientist, especially in scientific ocean drilling, is preferred.

This position will serve as the Expedition Project Manager to coordinate all aspects of precruise expedition planning, sea-going implementation, and postcruise activities. These duties include sailing as the IODP scientific representative on a two-month IODP expedition approximately once every 1 to 2 years. Individual scientific research, as well as collaboration with colleagues at Texas A&M University in fulfilling its educational mission, is required. This position will also provide scientific advice on laboratory developments in their area of specialization including scientific implementation of downhole logging on the JOIDES Resolution. Applicants must be able to cooperate and work harmoniously with others, have the ability to be an effective team leader, and foster collaboration among diverse scientific participants. 1. Marine Electromagnetics (5 year position) – focus on building on the successful Southampton EM Lab and delivering on three newly won grants: EU Blue Mining, NERC PI-LAB, and ERC EURO-LAB. This extended Fellowship will be strongly encouraged to also develop their own research strands and to link with colleagues both within the group, across NOCS and the broader national and international geophysics communities.

2. Passive Seismology (up to 2 Years) – this post will play a vital role in at the start of a large international project to image and understand the properties that make a tectonic plate strong. As part of this role the Fellow will work on two funded research projects: the NERC PI-LAB project and ERC EURO-LAB project. The Fellow will do one or more of the following projects: global imaging of the tectonic plate, in situ imaging of the 0 – 40 My old Atlantic plate using data collected from a large ocean bottom seismic experiment, in situ seismic-MT joint inversions, and/or developing full-waveform inversions of anisotropic structures based the data and ridge synthetics. In addition, to supporting these projects, the Fellow will be encouraged to develop their own research interests in seismology. Interaction with international collaborators is key, since broad impact will be attained by integrating seismic and MT results and incorporating a wide range of seismic resolutions.

The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at the University of California Santa Cruz is seeking a seismic reflection data/interpretation specialist to join the Crustal Imaging Laboratory for a 3-year term period. Selected candidate will be responsible for subsurface data acquisition, processing and interpretation of 2D and 3D multi-channel seismic data using academic and industry software packages, including packages such as Seismic Unix, SIOSEIS, OpendTect and IHS Kingdom software packages. Also required is acquisition, processing and interpretation of multibeam bathymetry, and well data to generate geological and predictive models in a carbonate geologic setting. Project Associate – Ocean Bottom Seismograph Instrument Pool and Instrumentation Services, Washington, DC

The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS, www.iris.edu) is a university research consortium dedicated to refining the understanding of the Earth through the collection and distribution of seismographic data. IRIS programs, funded by the National Science Foundation, contribute to scholarly research, education, earthquake hazard mitigation, and the verification of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Part of this mission includes management of the Ocean Bottom Seismograph Instrument Pool (OBSIP), facilitating the collection of high-quality marine seismological data. We seek a Project Associate to work predominantly on key tasks related to the OBSIP program and participate in the activities of other IRIS Instrumentation Services programs, such as the USArray Transportable Array.

The Project Associate will work closely with the OBSIP Program Manager to perform quality assurance for all OBSIP data, develop and utilize software tools, document OBSIP data analyses, and maintain the schedule for OBSIP facility operations. This position will also work with the Director of Instrumentation Services and other IRIS managers to collect and assemble technical data for reporting, presentations, and related project management tasks. Other potential tasks include working with seismological data and software tools for special studies, presenting project data, and preparing and editing content for IRIS web pages. The Project Associate will routinely interact with OBSIP instrument operators and scientists within the IRIS community. There is the expectation to attend and participate in regular workshops and scientific conferences. This job provides a unique opportunity to utilize scientific skills while participating in activities related to the management of large-scale seismological infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have a combination of knowledge, training, and/or experience in: seismology, the Unix environment, seismological software/tools, web authoring and office software, and scientific/technical writing and presentations. A graduate degree in geophysics/seismology, or equivalent experience, and strong communication and problem solving skills are required. Experience with OBS data and data corrections, relationship databases, and database management systems are plusses. The candidate must be able to work effectively and collegially with the IRIS Instrumentation Services team, instrument operators, and the broader earth science research community.
